A Married Little Christmas
Short review (213 words)
Abby Jimenez has built a devoted readership on romances that are funny on the surface and quietly serious underneath, and her first holiday collection plays to exactly that strength. A Married Little Christmas gathers three loosely linked novellas, "Sweater Weather", "Stealing Christmas" and the title story, set in small-town Minnesota. The setups are pure seasonal comfort: a lawyer who fakes a reunion with her ex, a man who ends up playing a "zombie Santa", and two sceptical friends who try to stop a whirlwind marriage and fall for each other instead.
The novella form suits Jimenez. Her best scenes have always been the quick, sparring exchanges between people who are slightly too honest with each other, and shorter stories keep the banter tight rather than stretched. Publishers Weekly praises her "sparkling wit" and calls the book "a true delight", which matches the warm, family-heavy tone readers expect from her.
Go in knowing what this is: a cosy, trope-forward holiday read rather than a full-length novel with a slow-building arc. If you want depth, her standalone novels offer more of it. As a December gift or a fireside palate cleanser, though, it does precisely what it promises, and its debut at No. 3 on the New York Times list suggests plenty of readers agree.
